The islands are known for their hydrothermal springs, natural carbonated waters, waterfalls and iron-rich swimming pools, which have been explored since the 16th century. In addition, their lush nature and crystal-clear sea offer the perfect environment for relaxation and connecting with nature. The Azores are a prime destination for wellness retreats, offering an authentic and deep connection with nature. The volcanic landscapes, the surrounding ocean and the unique tranquillity of the nine islands create an ideal setting for transforming experiences that combine therapeutic practices, moments of relaxation and a balanced diet.
Currently, there are several tourist establishments prepared - and some especially dedicated - to hosting retreats. These spaces have large rooms for group activities, gardens and outdoor areas immersed in nature, as well as spa services and carefully developed healthy eating programmes. All of this contributes to providing visitors with an environment favourable to rest, rebalancing and personal development.
The islands provide a variety of activities that promote connection with nature, such as hiking and walking trails, whale and dolphin watching, diving in crystal clear waters, and thermal baths. These activities allow visitors to enjoy the natural landscape and find peace and tranquillity.
The Azores has several SPAs offering a wide range of massages and body treatments that provide relaxing and rejuvenating experiences, with treatments using local and natural ingredients.
Survey & assessment of supply
The Azores Strategic Marketing and Tourism Plan (PEMTA) 2030, published in 2023, recognises wellbeing as a complementary product to the region's already established nature tourism products. This plan prioritises the structuring and qualification of wellbeing services, promoting the Azores as a destination of excellence for health and wellbeing tourism.
The Azores have huge potential to establish themselves as a leading destination for health and wellness tourism. The natural landscapes, unique endogenous resources and a growing range of specialised services place the region in a privileged position to attract visitors seeking to improve their physical and mental health in an authentic, peaceful and reinvigorating environment.
