In a sheltered area on the north coast of Pico, in São Roque, we find the natural pools that give access to the Arcadas de São Roque spot, an excellent location for diving baptisms, night diving, and snorkelling. Starting in the pools, at a depth of just 3 metres, we are confronted with a surprising landscape, from the beauty of the rock formations to the marine diversity. Going around the imposing wall on the right, we descend to 12 metres and, at the end of it, continuing for about 100 metres towards the northeast, we find the real Arcada de São Roque, an arch-shaped rock formation that rises from the bottom to 4 metres below the surface. The marine diversity in this arch is impressive, from the yellow corals (Parazoanthus axinellae) that cover most of its length to the large schools of Yellowmouth barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis) and colourful Azores Chromis (Chromis limbata). This spot also has another arch-shaped rock formation to the west, about 50 m from the first arch, with identical marine life, providing a spectacular end to the dive.
