Located in the parish of Água de Pau, municipality of Lagoa, Caloura occupies an extensive lava plain, formed around 3,500 years ago as a result of basaltic lava emitted by Monte Santo and other volcanic cones in the surrounding areas. It is in a protected area, featuring several geological formations, such as shallow coves and bays with different types of marine substrates. It is possible to find shallow sea caves here, in addition to the famous Arcos da Caloura (formed by small arches and a very wide cave, but with low ceilings). An important summer resort, its constructed heritage includes the small convent of nuns that initially received the image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. This is a geosite of the Azores Geopark with regional relevance and scientific, economic, educational and geotouristic interest and use.
