The Espalamaca Norte spot, next to Almoxarife beach and protected by Ponta da Espalamaca, is a sheltered location that starts at a depth of 6 metres and slopes gently down to 14 metres. It is ideal for days when diving is not possible elsewhere, for diving baptisms, night diving and snorkelling. The spot is characterised by large rounded rocks that gradually sink to a sandy bottom teeming with marine life. In the rocky area, there are abundant Brown moray (Gymnothorax unicolor), Black moray (Muraena augusti) and Mediterranean moray (Muraena helena) among the cracks in the rocks. As the depth increases, there are Parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense), schools of salema (Sarpa salpa), Rainbow wrasse (Coris julis), Ornate wrasse (Thalassoma pavo) and Azores chromis (Chromis limbata). On the sandy bottom, between 12 m and 14 m, a volcanic phenomenon can be observed – small air bubbles rising from the sandy bottom – in addition to other species such as Common stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca), Wide-eyed flounder (Bothus podas) and Atlantic lizardfish (Synodus saurus).
