Founded in 1882, the Jardim Duque da Terceira is a pleasant green space in the heart of the World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo. The garden is divided into several levels, decorated with lava stones, recalling the volcanic origins of the island and contrasting its dark colours with the bright and lively colours of the tropical plants. At the top is the Obelisco da Memória (Memory Obelisk), from where there is an excellent panorama of the beautiful city of Angra do Heroísmo. As well as a wide variety of botanical species, the garden features the “’Filho Pródigo”’ (four tile panels dating from 1740), the “’Tanque do Preto”’ (an old irrigation tank) and a children’s playground.
