The land on which José do Canto planted this botanical garden, which bears his name, in Ponta Delgada belonged to his wife, D. Maria Guilhermina Taveira de Neiva Frias Brum da Silveira, 12th Lady of the House and Morgado dos Bruns. They were part of two of the main estates of which she was the last administrator: that of Diogo Vaz Carreiro and that of Licenciado António de Frias, thus belonging to the same family for twenty generations.
