The amphitheatre-shaped Baía de São Lourenço is filled with terraces of vineyards running along the hillside, protected by quartels of basalt rock from the slope deposits, due to its steep slopes, and is one of the local landscape’s greatest assets. On its south-eastern edge is Ponta Negra, where you can see underwater lava flows and a fossiliferous deposit, rich in fossils of molluscs, sea urchins and fragments of cetacean bones, which has led it to be classified as a fossil site in the Santa Maria Palaeopark. Located in the southern part of the bay, opposite Ponta Negra, is Ilhéu do Romeiro, which has an erosion cave with stalactites and stalagmites, where you can see the only mammal endemic to the Azores – the Azorean Bat (Nyctalus azoreum). It is classified as a Protected Landscape Area and a geosite of Regional importance and of scientific, educational and geotouristic interest and use.
